UW-Madison Grades, including Grades that May Require Additional Action

As noted in Guide, L&S follows university policy on the use of specific letter grades and on grading deadlines.  Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the information provided by the UW-Madison Office of the Registrar when questions about general grading policies surface: Student Grading and GPA.

For specific questions about grades on assignments or tests or about grades in a particular class, students are encouraged to work directly with their instructors.

If you are reviewing your official or unofficial transcript and do not know what a grade designation means, visit this page and learn more about grade designations that do not fall in the standard A-F scale: Valid Grades.

Grades below may require additional action from a student or their instructor to resolve.

Extended Incomplete (EI)

EI stands for “Extended Incomplete”. More information is available here: L&S Incomplete and Extended Incomplete Grade Information

  • Students:  If you have been assigned an Extended Incomplete grade for a course and you have not already agreed with your instructor on a plan to complete the remaining work, you should contact your instructor to clarify what needs to be completed, when the work must be submitted, and what the consequences of not submitting the work are.

Incomplete (I)

I stands for “Incomplete”. More information is available here: L&S Incomplete and Extended Incomplete Grade Information and Undergraduate and Special (NonDegree) Student Lapsed Incomplete Grades

  • Students:  If you have been assigned an Incomplete grade for a course and you have not already agreed with your instructor on a plan to complete the remaining work, you should contact your instructor to clarify what needs to be completed, when the work must be submitted, and what the consequences of not submitting the work are.

Not Reported (NR)

NR stands for “Not Reported.”  More information is available here: UW-Madison No Report (NR) Grade

  • Instructors: Please submit a final grade for this student as soon as possible, as the grade can prevent the student from graduating, progressing in their course sequence, receiving financial aid, or qualifying for honors. If you are having difficulty submitting a grade, please contact L&S Academic Deans’ Services for assistance.
  • Students: Contact your instructor and ask whether they are waiting on any work from you.  If not, please encourage them to contact L&S Academic Deans’ Services if they are having any difficulty submitting the grade.

No Work (NW)

NW stands for “No Work.” More information is available here: UW-Madison No Report (NR) Grade

  • Instructors: This grade should only be submitted if the student has no evidence that the student ever attended the course and that no course work has ever been submitted.  It should not be used if the student initially attends the course but does not complete it.

Questions on Credits or Honors (Q)

Q stands for “question on credit or Honors”. More information is available here: “Q” Grades UW-Madison

  • Instructors: May use this grade if student chose Honors for the course but does not complete the Honors coursework. May also use this grade if a change to credits is needed in a variable credit course.
