If the deadline to drop a course(s) has passed, students must seek permission from L&S Undergraduate Academic Deans’ Services (ADS). The process can be initiated by answering the questions below. Students who are eligible to apply for a late drop will be invited to submit documentation and may be asked to meet with an academic dean.
NOTE: Approval of late drop applications is not guaranteed, even if documentation is provided. Students will remain enrolled in the course(s) until they are notified of approval and are expected to respond to outreach from ADS if requested.
To apply for a late drop, complete the form below.
A student MUST first read through the Dropping a Course information and THEN fill out the form below. Please note that in order to obtain a late drop, an individual provide strong documentation of their circumstances.
Providing documentation is not a guarantee that a student’s application for a late drop will be granted. Earning a poor grade in a course (or courses), not being aware of deadlines, or not receiving feedback on examinations until after the deadline are not considered strong reasons.
Dropping a course may affect financial-aid benefits and, for International students, may also affect visa status. Because of the impact of this decision, students are strongly encouraged to meet with relevant offices before completing this process.
Additional steps may be required for students in the following groups:
- Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) students: Consult your CAE academic advisor
- F1/J1 Visa Holders: Seek approval from International Student Services
- Student-athletes: Contact your Athletic Department advisor
- Financial Aid recipients: Review “Financial Aid” options in your Student Center
- University Housing residents: Review your Housing contract to see if your choice will affect your eligibility for housing.
Please answer ALL questions below.
Academic Deans are obligated to report violations of the UW-Madison Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence Policy and incidents or threats of child abuse or neglect: https://compliance.wisc.edu/titleix/mandatory-reporting/.
Late Drop Application
In order to qualify for a late drop, it is important to explain your situation on or shortly after the deadline for dropping the course(s). For most fall/spring courses, the deadline falls at the end of the 12th week of the term. For summer courses, there may be significant variation. An ADS team member will able to help you identify the specific deadline for the course you are applying to drop. Email: lsdeans@saa.ls.wisc.edu
